Joywave have been on my lists of bands to both photograph and review since I discovered their music in 2020, and they did not disappoint as they arrived at Manchester's iconic Deaf Institute. Following the release of their fourth studio album Cleanse, the indie rock band from Rochester, New York embarked on a celebratory tour, featuring their debut headlining gigs in the UK.

Following support from George O'Hanlon, the Deaf Institute saw Joywave fans pack into the venue, anxiously awaiting the arrival of Daniel Armbruster, Joseph Morinelli and Paul Brenner, accompanied by touring musicians. Kicking off their set with the upbeat "Coming Apart", Armbruster immediately set about demonstrating his undeniable showmanship, and the band had an immediate connection with their fans, enhanced by the intimacy of the venue.

After "Obsession" and "Every Window is a Mirror" came Cleanse single "After Coffee", and I watched as fans sang along to every lyric. Then came a Best Frenz cover of "Ugly Ending", before "F.E.A.R.". Discussing their previous encounters with Manchester, Armbruster mentioned having opened for Killers' frontman Brandon Flowers in the past, and having had Mancunian band The 1975 support them on a US tour.

"Travelling at the Speed of Light" saw the band slow their tempo before bringing it back with "Somebody New" from debut album How Do You Feel Now?, my personal favourite Joywave album.

I never fail to be surprised by a band's reach. Joywave have made their way onto the playlists of many people across the world, proven by the people I saw enjoying their set in front of my eyes. Feel good track "Half Your Age" and 2018 single "Blastoffff" came next as both band and crowd only intensified in energy.

"Tongues" and "Destruction" saw the electric Joywave set come to a close. I can't wait for this band to return to the UK, they are as impressive live as they are in headphones, and I'm excited to watch their fanbase grow as they continue to release stellar albums, forever pushing themselves and bringing something new to the table.
