You've probably heard of Biffy Clyro, but what about Empire State Bastard? Frontman Simon Neil's brand new band, a collaboration with Oceansize's Mike Vennart is completely different, and completely outstanding. We were there to experience their performance when they arrived in Manchester, following the release of their debut album Rivers of Heresy, which arrived earlier this year.

Simon Neil has gained his reputation and status from the undeniable success of titans Biffy Clyro. But who knew he could scream like that? His voice transforms into someone straight off a black metal record, lending itself to the music, his experience as a frontman shining through, even in this entirely new project. Complimented by Vennart's expertise and energetic performance on guitar, with phenomenal bass from Naomi Macleod.

On drums, ESB feature the legendary Dave Lombardo, who has played with the likes of Slayer, Suicidal Tendencies, Misfits and Testament to name a few. And now Empire State Bastard. Seeing him play in such a small venue was an incredible and unforgettable experience, and his hands and feet move with ease, at a seemingly inhumane speed. A perfect addition to an already stellar band.

As an incredible night in Manchester came to a close, the audience were left watching in awe, as were we. It truly was a memorable gig. Seeing such iconic musicians perform on a small stage was one thing, but their ensemble together is what makes them so special, each complimenting each other. A true metal band, which when I first learned of Empire State Bastard was not what I expected to hear, but it's exactly what they are. And after seeing them live, it's confirmed. They're one to watch - I can't wait to see what comes next.
